Players wanted! Everyone is welcome if you love trivia or want to represent the school on an academic level. If you are someone who strives change the perception of Barberton and are academically inclined we would ask you to join us in room A-220 after school Mondays and Wednesdays. We also have junior varsity players if you just want to take part in casual fun against other schools. Specifically we are looking for Students who specialize in or really enjoy classic and modern literature. Unfortunately comics do not count. (I wish they did) It is worth noting that academic challenge is specifically looking for varsity players, but everyone is welcome! We compete every other Monday, and practice Wednesdays and any other day people are available. It is important to note that you do not have to stay for the whole session, and if you have to leave early it’s fine. We had our first wins of the year last week, so let’s keep the ball rolling!

The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead Comic books first came out in 2003, seven years before the TV show aired in 2010. The show is written by Robert Kirkman, and Tony Moore, who started The Walking Dead. They were joined by Charlie Adlard, and Frank Darabont. Each episode is followed by The Talking Dead hosted by Chris Hardwick. Started in 2011, The Talking Dead is a talk show which discusses what happened each week and give a sneak peek at the next episode. The Walking Dead is still running. The eighth season airs on October 22, 2017.

Each week I will be updating you with the latest happenings in The Walking Dead. Look for my articles to come out after each and every episode.

It’s October, and thus- time to get spooky! I know there are a lot of artists in this school, (If you have any art you want featured, leave a comment) and a fun project for artists is inktober. Inktober is a project for artists to participate in online. There really aren’t any rules, and it’s ok if you don’t complete everything on time. The goal of inktober is to complete an illustration everyday based on a prompt, of which there are many lists out there. I think this project is especially useful as it not only gets you in the halloween spirit, but using only inks for your finished pieces can really improve your linework.

A good list to start with is this one!

The goal is to get creative with these prompts! You can interpret them however you want, and you can color with markers of other inks! Share your art in the comments! I have attached one of my Inktober pieces for this year to give an idea of the goal and show I’m participating!

The Fast Count – No Mercy Report 09-24-2017

Sunday’s No Mercy pay per view had a rather lackluster card. First, on the kickoff show we had Elias v Crews. This match had little to no build going into it. The match was added the Friday before the show. No one was really interested in the match itself. Throughout the match it was rather evenly matched. Closer to the end however Crews made a small mistake leading to Elias getting the pinfall.

Next, we start the main show. First match on the card was Miz v Jason Jordan, Miz defending his Intercontinental championship. Jordan got this shot by winning a fatal 5 way on Raw earlier that week. I believe that Jordan was not suppose to be in that spot. Jeff Hardy got injured during the match on Raw and if he wouldn’t have I know he would have won the shot. But nonetheless Jordan looked to have the match won after controlling most if not all of the match, until “The Miztouage” (a group of goons The Miz keeps to help him win) got involved while the ref’s back was turned leading to a skull crushing finale for the win and The Miz to retain.

Next on the card Balor v Wyatt. This feud has been happening for what seems like forever. This is all together their 3rd match on pay per view alone. Needless to say no one was very into the match. Wyatt attacked Balor before the match up and it looked as if the match itself wasn’t going to happen but as soon as Wyatt hit the mic to trash talk him he turned around and made his way back to the ring. Throughout the entire match Balor had most if not all of the offense leading to him getting the pinfall. Up Next on the card was Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins v Sheamus and Cesaro for the Raw Tag Team Championships.

The newly reunited brothers in arms Ambrose and Rollins were white hot off not only their reuniting but also having won the titles off Sheamus and Cesaro at the biggest party of the summer Summerslam. The biggest point the challengers seemed to make was can Rollins and Ambrose really stay on the same page. The match itself was a very high pace, high energy encounter. The offense was all Sheamus and Cesaro. Rollins and Ambrose seemed to have small bursts of energy but the self proclaimed “Bar” always seemed to be just one step ahead. You had to believe that they were walking out with the titles until in one final gasp Ambrose and Rollins hit the double team and get the pinfall to retain their titles. It was an extremely hard fought match and you had to give props to Cesaro having got his two front teeth shoved up into his gums and still somehow managing to put on such an entertaining match.

Next on the card was the Fatal 5 Way for the Raw Women’s championship. The five women involved being Nia Jax, Sasha Banks, Emma, Bayley and the champion Alexa Bliss. The story leading in was the fall apart of Bliss and Jax’s friendship and the return of Bayley. The woman (Bayley) had been out for months with a shoulder injury and had returned the Monday before the pay per view and for seemingly no reason thrown in the match. The match was extremely clumsy and seemed to be going nowhere until Jax hit her slam and Bliss throw her into the ring pole to get the pin on Emma to retain her championship.

Next on the card was probably the match more built up then the main event Reigns v Cena. The build up had some admittedly good promo work. Reigns who usually seems stale and bland on the mic had some pure genius lines. Cena had a few good shots of his own. The match was fairly well matched both meeting the other at every turn. Up until Reigns hit a spear for the pinfall victory. At the end of the match Cena and Reigns embraced and Cena raised Reigns’ hand. Which in storyline made little to no sense. After the match the crowd took to chanting “Thank You Cena.”

Next on the card was Amore v Neville for the cruiserweight championship. Amore having just got out of a feud with his ex best friend Cass had just joined 205 Live and for some reason got a title shoot. The match was rather boring and lacked excitement but when the Ref had his back turned Amore hit Neville with a cheap shot to win the title.

Finally the main event of the show Lesnar v Strowman for the Universal Championship. The build up was rather exciting even if Lensar rarely showed up to Raw. It is just one of those matches that doesn’t need much build it is just exciting. The match was huge let down. We were expecting Lesnar to get a beating but instead Lesnar hit him with a few suplexes and an F5 and retain with a pinfall.

Saint Patrick’s Day

Every year on March 17th, the Irish and the Irish-at-heart across the globe celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. St. Patrick’s Day celebrates the patron saint of Ireland, the arrival of Christianity and Irish culture. St. Patrick’s Day has become an international festival celebrating Irish culture with parades, dancing, special foods and a whole lot of green.

Who was Saint Patrick and why do we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day?

Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, is one of Christianity’s most widely known figures – but despite his fame, his life remains a mystery.

According to the Confession of Patrick, he was captured by Irish pirates at the age of 16 and brought to Ireland as a slave – where folklore states he tended to pigs and sheep on Slemish Mountain in County Antrim. During this period, it is said he developed a profound Christian faith. After six years, Patrick claimed he heard a voice telling him that he would soon go home and that his ship was ready. Fleeing his captors, he travelled to a port 200 miles away, where he persuaded the captain of the ship to let him on. After three days of sailing, they landed in Britain, where Patrick walked for 28 days. Eventually, he returned home to his family before moving to France to study for the priesthood. Patrick was then ordained a priest and then a bishop. He returned to Ireland and played a big part in converting the country to Christianity. Patrick is said to have died on March 17th in the year 461.

Olympic Runner Inspires Barberton High School’s 9th Grade Class

On Tuesday, February 14th Makorobondo “Dee” Salukombo was welcomed into Barberton High School to share his story and inspire our ninth grade class. Ninth grader, Mavis, came to America from Ghana 5 years ago and had the honor of introducing our speaker.

Dee shared his story about being a refugee from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and coming to the United States in 2004. He faced many hardship in the Congo and as a refugee in Uganda. Despite all of his difficulties, his parents were passionate about him receiving a strong education. He and his family came to America with nothing but a second chance at a new life while Dee strived to make the most of his educational opportunities. Dee started an organization called, “Project Kirotshe,” after graduating from Lakewood High School and Denison University. The organization was named after his hometown in the Congo.

The video attached represents Dee’s kind heart and down-to-earth personality. He has passed down his traits with not only the children in Congo, but now the ninth graders at Barberton High School. We would like to thank Dee for inspiring our teachers and students and sharing his incredible story.

Items You Might Not Know Were Invented by African Americans

Imagine a life without potato chips, the traffic signal, elevators, and many other things that have become a part of people’s everyday life. African Americans have invented and improved so many of these important things. It’s never a bad thing to look back on and think about the items you have and the history behind them. In celebration of Black History Month, here are some things that wouldn’t exist or be what they are now without African Americans.

Garrett Morgan was an astonishing man who invented and improved many items that the world would be very different without. One of his most prominent inventions is a respiratory device that later helped develop the blueprint for the gas mask. Other notable inventions and improvements include a hair-straightening product, the traffic signal, and the sewing machine. Morgan definitely paved the way for other black inventors and has had a huge impact on the safety of people fighting in wars, and others as well.

Potato chips have been a favorite snack of people around the world for a long time. They’re sold and consumed everywhere, and we have an African American man to thank for that.  In 1853, George Crum was working as a chef in a restaurant in New York. Dissatisfied with a customer’s complaint about how his fries were made, Crum cut the potatoes into super thin slices, fried them to an almost burnt crisp, and added a generous amount of salt. To his surprise, the customer actually enjoyed the creation. When Crum opened his own restaurant a few years later, every table received a bowl of them. The next time you eat a chip, remember Crum and how one person’s criticism led to the invention of a beloved snack.

When you think of inventions such as the lightbulb and the telegraph, you think of Thomas Edison, or maybe even Alexander Graham Bell. One person you probably haven’t heard of though, is Lewis Latimer. He is just as memorable as these other men and worked alongside theme as well. He helped Edison with the invention of the light bulb and the telegraph, and came up with improvements for the light bulb. Although his work isn’t very well known, it was very prominent and should not be forgotten.

Madam C.J. Walker was a brilliant woman that is an example to all that there are no limits to what you can do. Walker created a line of hair care products, mainly for African Americans, that changed the world of beauty and hair. To promote her products, she even traveled the United States to get the word out about them. She went on to become the first American woman to become a self made millionaire.

Alexander Miles is another great inventor that improved elevators drastically. Before him, elevator doors had to be manually opened and closed. Without his improvements, people would fall down elevator shafts while trying to get on. The mechanism he invented made elevator rides safer by triggering the doors to open and close. Elevators aren’t as dangerous as they were when first invented, and we have Miles to thank for that.

Even through times of hardship and mistreatment, these people used their great minds to change the world for the better. These African American inventors are inspirational and are names that should not be forgotten.

Valentine’s Day

St Valentine’s Day happens this Tuesday on February 14. It’s a day where people show their love and affection for another person- usually in the form of cards, flowers, gifts and messages.

It originated as a Western Christian liturgical feast day honoring an early saint named Valentinus, and is recognized as a significant cultural and commercial celebration in many regions around the world, although it is not a public holiday in any country.

The day first became associated with romantic love within the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the 14th century, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.

What’s Cupid got to do with it all? Cupid is also known in Latin also as Amor (”Love”) . His Greek counterpart is Eros and he is just one of the ancient symbols associated with St Valentine’s Day, along with the shape of a heart, doves, and the colors red and pink. Cupid is portrayed as a small winged figure with a bow and arrow which he uses to strike the hearts of people. People who fall in love are to be ‘struck by Cupid’s arrow.’

Didn’t Watch The Super Bowl? Here’s What You Missed.

On Sunday, February 5th, Super Bowl 51 filled the TV’s of many football lovers. The New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons took the field leaving many people on the edge of their sofa’s the entire game. The New England Patriots have participated in 9 total Super Bowls, and as of Sunday, won five of them. But sitting through the game, we expected a different turnout. At halftime, The Falcons were in the lead with a 21-3 score. The Patriots slowly crept up on the Atlanta team during the second half making it the first Super Bowl to go into overtime. The game ended 34-28 with the Patriots turning the game around and defeating the Falcons.

Football wasn’t the only exciting part about Super Bowl 51. Lady Gaga flew into halftime and took every one by surprise. Yes, she actually flew. Gaga started her show on the roof with a mash-up of “God Bless America” and “This Land is Your Land” before jumping down to the field bonded by a rope. Making it to her set, she performed many well known songs, while including a new one. “Poker Face,” “Born This Way,” “Hello, Hello,” “Just Dance,” “Million Reasons,” and “Bad Romance” were iconically sung and danced to while she hugged fans between songs. The performance included many costume changes and several backup dancers. It was truly fun to watch and quickly took over the internet.

With The Patriots making a significant comeback defeat against The Falcons, Lady Gaga putting on an amazing halftime performance, and Tom Brady now having enough NFL championship rings to fill one hand. Super Bowl 51 is now one for the books.
